RealChat Software

2.1. Upgrading from Earlier Releases

Client Upgrade

Client upgrade is usually a matter of replacing the client .jar archive RealChat.jar. The downloaded client update file is usually named RealChatXXX.jar, where XXX is the version number. All you need is to rename it to RealChat.jar and overwrite the old one.

On some end-user's browsers, the old RealChat.jar file may be cached, which means that the browser would still use the old version for some time. To prevent this, you can leave the downloaded file name as is and update the <applet archive> tag of chat pages instead, thus forcing the browsers to get the fresh version immediately.

If you are using FTP to upload files, be sure to use BINARY transfer mode. You may need to restart your browser in order the changes to take effect.

Server Upgrade

Server upgrade is usually a matter of replacing all the .class files in the /rcs/server subdirectory of the directory where you initially installed RealChat Server; for example, /usr/local/rcserver/rcs/server/ or C:\Program Files\RealChat Server\server\. If you downloaded a server upgrade archive from our site, simply extract it and overwrite the old Class files.

If you are using FTP to upload files, be sure to use BINARY transfer mode. You must restart RealChat Server in order for the changes to take effect.

Note: The client and server versions appear on the About panel of the RealChat Client applet.
